Doris was pulling out of the grocery store parking lot when another motorist slammed into her front passenger door. The motorist’s mistake most likely saved Doris’ life.
“Every time I look at that dent, I think about what happened afterward,” said Doris, a mother of five and grandmother of eight. “It was literally a blessing in disguise.”
Doris received a check for $750 from the motorist’s insurance company. Instead of using it to fix her car, the 76-year-old decided to go to YourScan™, which allowed doctors to take a detailed, X-ray-like picture of the inner body — including the heart, lungs and colon — to detect such ailments as the early stages of heart disease, stroke, emphysema, and cancers of the lung and colon.
In Doris’ case, it was heart disease, the leading cause of death in America. Her CT scan showed that one of her major coronary arteries was 99% blocked. “I had had heart problems before and was suffering from some shortness of breath, but I wasn’t that worried about it,” she said. “Now I know that I was a walking time bomb. I really believe that body scan saved my life.”
Two days before Thanksgiving, Doris had triple bypass surgery. These days, she goes to cardiac rehabilitation therapy at Anne Arundel Medical Center three times a week and recently built herself up to 45 minutes of exercise in one visit. “I’m fine now,” Doris reported. “I’m going to be a great-grandmother soon and I’m so glad that I’m going to be here for it!”
Doris said the non-invasive scan, which requires no sedation and is performed on an outpatient basis, was “a snap.” “The scan itself took 10 to 15 minutes and the whole thing – from when I walked in the door to when I left – took maybe an hour and 15 minutes,” she said.
